Jobs handed his resignation letter today, with a recommendation that Cook be promoted from Acting CEO to CEO immediately.

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

And in bigger news, sony and microsoft fanboys throw parties across the streets as they find out that steve jobs has resigned as CEO, most likely due to the fact that now sony and microsoft may have a slim chance of competing with the otherwise far superior apple.

Does his resignation have anything to do with his health?

From what ive gathered, in 2009 when he took sick leave it was thought to be due to either complications with his liver transplant or a recurrence of a tumour. So thinking logically, if it is due to health, which i think it is. It is most likely due to one of these factors.. sadly.

Probably does! I just read a bunch of articles and they all say Apple would not state the reason for his actions.

Anyway, I never saw this day coming soon...

Double post, my mistake. :P

EDIT: Apparently not.

I don't feel like typing why, again, but Steve Jobs isn't leaving Apple, he's only resigning from his CEO position.

He wants to stay as Chairman of the Board.

Please elaborate on what you mean by "superior".

Price-wise, Mac's provide the least bang-for-your-buck, next to Alienware. I'd rather spend $1,000 on a custom PC than $2,000+ on a pre-built and restricted Macintosh with the exact same, if not inferior, hardware.

And in regards to a Mac's function, it's far more limited than a PC's. This has even been admitted by Macintosh loyalists, along with the fact that people often buy Macs because they aren't very knowledgeable with computers.

As for "we can't get viruses"; first off, you can. Second, if you actually know about the functionality of a PC, then chances are you know how to do the easiest thing: avoid a virus.

If not, you should be a Mac user, considering someone has to hold your hand the whole way through. Upside Down Happy

And this is coming from someone who adores Apple and Macs.

price-wise, yes they are the most expensive for what you get. But when you earn the money to have one, who cares.

A mac is in no way more limited than a pc. For starters you can run pc on mac, you cannot run mac on pc without an emulator. I currently run windows side by side with my mac, and as such have both computers at my fingertips.

People who say 'we cant get viruses' are ignorant, and you stereotype by using the term we, as though mac users are some sort of group that stick together. However macs are far far far less likely to get a virus than windows because there are less out there and mac is harder to target, therefore regardless of whether its 'virusproof' or not, it is still better than windows.

You dont adore apples and macs because from what you've said you've clearly not owned one (certainly not a modern one) and if you have then you must be illiterate with computers because macs far outshine pc's in looks, virusprotection and practicality. macs are for the sophisticated members of society.
