i had this problem but the recovery mode option worked for but after it installed it kept trying to get me to re-format my hdd due to some error but i fixed it by just doing the rest of the process through recovery mode due to the fact i could not reach the xmb because of the error.
problem was 3.55 fw doesn't have bd patch
if someone ever runs into the same problem msg me on here and i'll try and get back to you as soon as possible but i wrote above pretty much explained it just not in detail.

Did you try formatting the USB before trying to use it?
