i did this exact same thing, 3 times. except, i kept the ps3's for a month before returning them
if, for some DUMB ODD reason it is on later than 3.41 (which it wont be) - just return it saying its defective and just ask for a new one. :y:

alright guys, when you buy the ps3 on 3.01 firmware (thats what they are on when u buy them brand new). you will want to upgrade to 3.41.
how to upgrade to 3.41
what you want to do is go to You must login or register to view this content.
this is where you download firmware 3.41. it is a .PUP file.
you put this on your USB flash drive in the folder PS3/UPDATE, so your flash drive will read F:/PS3/UPDATE/PS3-UPDATE8273423.PUP <-- something like that
now, just plug your usb drive into your ps3, go to system update -> update via USB device.
jailbreak
the only time your ps3 is jailbroken is when you have your jailbroken DEVICE plugged into the PS3. so, if you start your ps3 normally (without your mod chip plugged in), it won't be jailbroken. you can return any ps3 within 30 days of purchase at pretty much any store. i've done it multiple times. they don't care whats wrong with it, they will just take it back and refund you.
shit, the first time i paid with a credit card, updated to 3.50 on accident so i returned it and got a new one, jailbroke it etc, and then returned it and they ended up giving me the CASH instead of putting it back on the credit card.

THIS IS NOT MY TUT I COPY AND PASTED THIS INTO A NOTEPAD A WHILE AGO AND I DONT REMEMBER WHO MADE THIS
Edit your patch on your jailbroken 3.41 PS3 and use data transfer utility to send it to the 3.50 PS3. More in-depth tutorial on how to do this is around the forum.
Now on your 3.50 PS3, check your patch works right then plug in some storage device and go to System Settings>Backup Utility>Back Up. This will backup your all the data on the PS3 onto your storage (including the MW2 patch). The backup is only small, 30MB!
Now do steps 1 and 2 for how many patches you want. Now I recommend you copy these backups onto your computer to keep a record on what patch is in what backup.
Now when you feel like a change of patch go to System Settings>Backup Utility>Restore and choose the back up with the patch in it you want. Don't worry this only takes less than a minute to complete.
Do step 4 everytime you want to change your patch.
