Hacking is not just about free games.
Remember that the whole way a PS3 is setup is because a SMALL group of people got together and deemed it. And then Marketing got involved and they tweaked it.
You used to be able to turn on a PS3 and have it set so that what ever disk was in it would automatically start up. remember that.
Well a few updates ago when they worked over the interface that feature went away. They still have start disk on insertion but who takes out a disk every time they turn off a machine.
Note: My apologies if this feature is still present I figured that since after the update it quit working and I took like 2 minutes to find the setting again and couldn't I figured it was gone but this is still a good example.
Also when you turn on a machine what does it always start on? The Playstation Network-What's new Which are a bunch of ads basically.
Now when you move over to the Game Menu what is the item it lands on, Playstation Store (Which is the second place you can access the store from, the first being under.....where you started at the Playstation Network main tab!
What just happened was marketing taking over the user interface they dictated how things go not from a friendly user experience view but from a lets milk every dollar we can out of them by force feeding the commercial aspect of the PS3 to them.
Some one at Sony figured out that if people turned on the PS3 and it went right into the game more than likely when you were done with the game you just turned it off. You never saw any of Sony's other revenue streams for the PS3. So they took that feature away and while they were at it they made sure you saw the revenue streams by putting them right there every time you started the system.
Now if you could Hack the system would you not be interested in being able to once again dictate how your system starts and what it starts into?
Just one example of many. You I and everyone else has different agenda's then companies. We are looking to maximize our experience they are looking to maximize profits and those two things are like fire and ice.
So by hacking the system you can take back and enjoy it rather than be ruled by it. Plus at several million machines out there there are good ideas floating around that never get heard or used because they are not part of Sony's small (relative to the masses of users) Dev team.
