I was talking to some friends about how I would rather pay for Xbox LIVE than get PSN for free b/c of the problems I heard on it. And one of my friends showed me this link from GameInformer, although it is older I did not see it posted on here and found it interesting.

In a presentation last month, Sony's Kaz Hirai mentioned that Sony was considering a premium PSN service that would come with a monthly fee. New comments from the company show that this idea is clearly gaining momentum.

Speaking to Nikkei Electronics, Sony Computer Entertainment executive vice president and chief technology officer Masayuki Chatani again brought up the pay-to-play topic: "In addition to single-payment packaged software, there are also schemes like monthly fees or per-item charges," explained Chatani when talking about new ways for Sony to generate revenue.

Sony already has an array of per-item charges, whether you're talking about PSN content or items in Home, but monthly fees are clearly something different. Kaz Hirai, in his previous remarks, also mentioned the possibility of charging for a premium PSN subscription, but further reiterated that there would always be a free option as well.

This dates back to December but is still being processed by Sony if they will pursue this or not.
Even though a free option would be offered, it may be limited. Xbox has a free option of Silver but you get updates much slower and have no access to online multiplayer. This could happen with Sony.

Otherwise a free option will be available like with Xbox Silver (Xbox's free option), but will be limited. BTW there are many annoying PS3 'fanboys' too Winky Winky"

Yea I understand the whole fanboy annoyance.

As for the benefits of premium PSN;
I read somewhere else that if they were to start charging for PSN then the premium users would get several benefits such as in game voice chat (similar to XBL's) and several other things that I can't quite remember. If there would be no benefits then it would be a clear idiotic decision by Sony and probably cause the companies game console popularity to decline greatly...

Personally I think this is the stupidest decision Sony could possibly make.
Other than Blu-Ray & the major flaw of the XBOX(RRoD & E74), this is the only thing going for the PS3. Free online service; PSN. Just recently I've noticed a lot of MS fanboys switching to the PS3 and if Sony do this, they will lose more than they will gain. Although I shan't be switching to the XBOX even if this goes ahead, I'm sure a lot of people will considering the in all honesty superior service XBL offers. The one thing PSN has going for it is the fact it's free; take that away and it can't even compete w/ XBL.
It's very simple Sony - you're making enough money from other things as it is so simply say no to a little extra cash and keep your customers happy.

Don't worry as far as i am aware the Premium option for PSN is going to be like "29.99(or whatever) a month and you get free movie downloads etc"
Sony will never charge for PSN(online play) because as you said 360 service is better and it's whats changing 360 fans over to Ps3.

If they do this and there is nothing like a name change option or better features then I call it quits, I would buy a 360.

Where did you here it was going to be $29.99 a MONTH? That's extremely expensive in my opinion and would be crazy for them to charge, lol. Xbox LIVE cost $49.99 a YEAR, just to compare how much of a difference there is between the 2.

Just to have PSN "Premium" would cost $360 a year at that rate.

This is really annoying me! People at my school think that PSN will be pay only. So, they told me they might switch to the light side. This is already pissing me off as 95% of my school are 360 fanboys who have never given the PS3 a chance. Anyway, what's the point of paying monthly for something like cross chat gaming. Most people on my friends list wouldn't pay so I wouldn't be able to talk to them anyway. Bad move for Sony. Keep you're respect and stay free.
