(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); I'm not sure if any of you have heard but Matthieu of Overfl0w is stating that his exploit is leading to 3.60 Application Keys, rather they are the encrypted keys that allow users to play the games on the disks. This could in turn lead to a 3.60 Custom Firmware release. Perhaps Sony is using the bad-reputation of Anonymous to cover the fact that rather than they being hacked from an 'outside threat', they are in fact doing a employee-only test into a new PSN-core functionality, designed as a countermeasure against Matthieu's exploit.

What we know:
- PSN is currently down (pretty obvious judging by the ShoutBox :carling: )
- Sony states that it is due to an outside threat, however they could just be saying this.
- Matthieu and Overfl0w are currently looking into an exploit that allows 3.60 AKs (Application Keys) and the possibility of 3.60 CFW.
- We already know Sony do not like us running CFW, as we found out in the days of 3.55.

What could this mean:
- They might be developing a "core-functionality" include that detects the a modified firmware file and instantaneously and permanently bans the console from online services.

By core-functionality, I mean something that would inevitably end up on all of our consoles, perhaps a silent update. We know that Sony are very defensive and get all dinosaur about CFW.

What are the signs
-- When PSN comes back online, check for slow internet at the time you sign in and monitor the speed during the first 5-15 minutes after signing in, if the speed is lower than normal could mean your PS3 is silently updating to counter-act the exploit.
-- Check the Wireless Activity monitor, if its blinking and you aren't doing anything online but are signed into PSN, could mean you are being updated.
-- You will probably have to sign a new User Agreement which may have a clause in there that allows them to silently update your console.

This is all a speculation of course. What do you guys think Smile?

heres a theory ive been hearing lately, Portal 2 came out on the 19th, right? so its weird that when the game released, the day after PSN servers are down. Ive been told that Portal 2 links to Steam and valve which gives a gateway to the PC world. So it gives a direct link to PSN as if the people of playstation allowed it. Hackers are very smart so they took advantage of this hidden feature on portal 2 and attacked PSN within it, just a theory dont flame on me, i take no credit for this hypothesis.

Dude this sounds like what it could be if my ps3 silently updated without asking me I will smash it with a sledge hammer and use my other ps3 on 3.41 jb

NO, because on Wednesday the error that came up first was not maintenance, which they had no control over, until yesterday (or before that) the maintenance came up instead.

your theory still could be right, but highly unlikely Smile

I don't think this would happen. Because you must agree to the terms by your own will power. If they go ahead and update your Ps3 by themselves then you would not be agreeing to the Terms of Use with the update. Winky Winky

Everyone has their own speculations, however we KNOW they really really hate CFWs and will likely do anything to stop 3.60 turning into another hacker's beer bash. It could have something to do with Portal 2's link to the PC gateway, HOWEVER, the game DID only come out on the same day as the PSN went down, so perhaps they either took it down to seal any PC-Gateway links. Or they as I said, are trying to combat the 3.60 CFW Exploit that may be released soon.

Another thing that goes against the Portal 2 theory, is that it only came out on the day it PSN went down, that doesn't give enough time for hackers to flood and crash the servers. If it was a week or so, then maybe a group of thousands would do this, but in the first few hours of release, perhaps not.

Perhaps so, but we know they sometimes release new Terms of Use / User Agreements, perhaps they'll try and sneak in a clause that allows them to do so, near the bottom, because they know most people don't bother spending an hour reading through pages and pages of boring law-text.

Who knows what the monkeys at PlayStation may do

Trustworthy lvl 3
here's my theory, you said check if it's slow after you sign in for first 15 minutes,,

everyone is offline, so if everyone signs in at the same time pretty much it should be slow as **** anyway for a while before the servers get less flooded??
