i spoke to the guy who i bought it from and he gave me a ps3brake.com usb and said i need to install the FW is this true? if it is how do i do it ?

hmm. try putting it into recovery menu and reset the settings on it. if that doesnt work, go in recovery menu again and restore the ps3 totally.

Yes access its recovery mode to do this follow these steps;

1. Turn off Playstation3.

2. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.

3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps

4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.

5. You will be promted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button

6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

OK i had the exact prob on my 2nd hand console so follow these steps
Step 1- Take out the ps3 hardrive and connect it to a pc format it to fat32 you will find a program on the net that does that make the partician primary

Step 2- Put the hardrive back in the ps3 and turn it on it might turn on then after 5-15 secs it will turn off again (THATS OK) or it might come up saying the hardrive need to be formated Ok if it still turns off Like i said THATS OK follow step-3

Step 3- OK first bring up Safe mode recovery menu whatever you want to call it and go to system update it will say what update you are go on google and search that OFW and download it put it on a usb the root of the usb make a foled called PS3 Then UPDate inside that then inside update put the OFW then put it into your ps3 and press selcect and start on the update options On the recovery menu

Step 4- It should come up the update update to it and it wil want you to format And format it then follow step 5

How do i connect the HD to the pc ?

Use a sata cable or open up a xbox 360 hardrive and take the cable out of that (its pretty hard)
