Well, those with high hopes of a new Playstation console emerging this year are
getting put down, again. President of SCEA, Jack Tretton, spoke with IGN yesterday
morning and said that a new console would "distract" the company.
With the Vita being launched for the rest of the world in about a week, announcing a
new console would reduce the companies attention from the Vita. Simply from a business
aspect, sales of the Vita would plummet because consumers would rather buy a new console,
rather than a handheld. Thus the focus of the company would be on the console. Honestly, I
don't blame them. The PS3 is still a strong console with loads of blockbuster hits and exclusives
that are coming out this year. Plus, I'm sure Sony wants to push the Vita into the hands of it
customers for a little while before talks of a new console are made.
With rumors of the next generation Playstation being announced at E3 this year, Tretton was
very fervent in his interview with IGN, reinforcing his previous state-ment that the PS3 will have
a ten year life cycle. Meaning that announcements of a new console probably won't be made until
2016 or so. Although the light of a new Playstation arriving this year is quickly dwindling, consumers
can find comfort in the fact their PS3's have a couple more years until they become obsolete.
Tell me what you guys feel. Do you wish a new PS console would come out this year?
Or would you rather enjoy your PS3 a little while longer?
