That's impossible for him to use Linux to get to the files because in order for him to be able to play online he has to be on the latest Firmware which we all know disabled the OtherOS (Linux) capability.
I think what he's done is hooked up his PS3 HDD to a PC and used HDD Studio (or maybe another program?) and decrypted the files that way and then gone on to using WinHex, that's why I think he's saying it was a pain in the ass.
P.S I'm not completely dumb I know the difference between a .Pkg and an .ff patch lol.

the other OS is still there for people that used geohot's custom patch, so maybe he used geohot's patch to keep the other OS capability so he could still run linux
