If you want to get in shape, RUN!!!!! If you run for three miles a day, six days a week you will see results by a month. I did cross country this year to get my three mile time to under eighteen minutes for the Marine Corps physical fitness test, and I saw people go out for cross country that were somewhat overweight before and they got much slimmer after.
Running is the #1 most important thing to do to loose weight and get fit. Then comes diet. Dont go on Jenny Craig, but eat anything you want but fast food. Fast food has so much calories you wont believe.
If you want a higher metabolism, eat a lot and workout a lot. Do not eat a lot, then decide to not run/workout, you will stay the same, or get worse.
Oh, and dont be one of those people that runs on ellipticals. Go out in the fresh air, and run!! You will enjoy seeing sights or things you would have never have experienced running on an elliptical, and is a hellava lot less boring imo

That could be a problem. In my part of California, we get no snow
I suggest finding an indoor track at your local school and running on that.
If you cannot find an indoor track, get some snow shoes, and hike. I went hunting up north for the winter and walking miles in snowshoes burns calories like no other. Just make sure you dont get lost :p
