Jamey Rodemeyer, a 14-year-old boy from Williamsville, NY, took his life Sunday after what his parents claim was years of bullying because of struggles with his sexuality.

His parents, Tracy and Tim Rodemeyer, say that Jamey faced bullies for years, though things intensified in middle school, according to NBC 2. Jamey recently became a freshman at Williamsville North High School.

In the wake of their loss, the Rodemeyers hope to carry on a message of anti-bullying and acceptance. "To the kids who are bullying they have to realize that words are very powerful and what you think is just fun and games isn't to some people, and you are destroying a lot of lives," Jamey's father told WIVB.

Tracy Rodemeyer misses her son, but hopes the loss can still be used to teach a message of tolerance. "It took him away from our family way too early and we're just convinced that he had a purpose on this planet and it was to touch as many people as he could," she told NBC 2.

According to NBC, the Rodemeyers had gone to the school about the problem in the past. Jamey even sought counseling to learn to deal with the problem, but it seems it wasn't enough.

While they say their son seemed happy in the days leading up to the tragedy, his "It Gets Better" YouTube posting from May includes details about how intense the bullying was.

Through it all, Jayme remained outwardly optimistic. “That's all you have to do. Just love yourself and you're set. And I promise you, it'll get better,” he said in the video, which you can see in full below.

Gay bullying has been gaining increasing attention in the media, as a number of tragedies has brought the issue into the spotlight. Earlier this month the California State Senate passed "Seth's Law" a measure designed to curb anti-gay bullying in schools.

I can't discuss with him any further, he is an idiotic teenager know it all. No one can surpass his knowledge.

Hmm this is another weird random statement that I fail to make any sense of. I don't really think YOU know what YOUR "on" about... whatever that means.
I for one know what I am saying is 100% fact and that is that in no way is suicide anyone's fault or doing but the person committing it. Anything else you say about personal experience with depression or how you feel about something has nothing to do with the factual statement I have brought forth.

There's a difference between bullying someone over something they're unable to change, however you can get educated and work on your stupidity.

Please don't compare online name calling such as 'stupid' to someone who has to wake up everyday knowing that they're going to get severely bullied, and have nothing to look forward to whatsoever, your stupidity and ignorance out-stands me.

It is sad that you assume things about other people when in reality you are not correct, but that is in the same vein as everything else you are saying so I am not surprised...

I find this post hilarious and ignorant. Online name calling is a huge new issue in the "bullying" problems that kids face these days. Facebook and Myspace bullies have the ability to reach the entire school with embarrassing posts about individuals. Just because you called someone a name on the internet doesn't make it not bullying or name calling mister internet hero. So hypocritical..

I felt so bad yesterday. I saw on the news that a ELEVEN YEAR OLD committed suicide because he was bullied. I don't know if he was gay but still, a eleven year old killed himself because of a few fuks. I can't believe the world we live in today.

No no, online bullying is an issue. Bullying being constant attempts to embarrass/ or make feel bad someone over an extended period of time. Being called out online once for being a cold dipshit isn't

You really nitpick things dont you? I am sorry bro but it doesnt matter where you do it at its still the same thing... at this point I dont expect you to see anything other than the way you view your own little world and values so its not surprising to me at all.

This whole time I have never thrown a single insult at any of you. That is not what I am doing/saying/ or trying to make you understand. I am just making a simple statement that it is nobody elses fault that this kid took his own life but his own. You can call me any name you want but that does not change that one simple fact. Justify your namecalling however you want but it is one in the same. You are still making a uncalled for, negative comment, towards someone you have no idea about, and with no intention of being productive in any fashion, just for your own personal ego to feel like you "did something". In a literally definition of the word you are being a bully Smile

If you really feel so strongly about it how about trying to start a rally somewhere instead of throwing around negative comments on the interwebs.
