okay like i said purely my opinion, i am no veteran on this site i think i joined in like 2009 and i remember hitting 150k members maybe even less i dunno so i hope my opinion actually means something to someone else.
but i joined this site mainly as i was into gaming and i loved doing glitches on W@W but i find i'm unable to even go into the individual gaming sections without being bombarded with Mr X 1337 hacker trying to shift his edit of a patch or trying to sell his service to hacks my account, yes i admit i did jailbreak my console but only for like a week before i decided meh this is boring to me, i know other people find it fun and some people are really good at it one name springs to mind: juddy.
i'm far from being the most active user on this site i barely even comment any more as there is very little that interests me anymore i know this is a major rant and i'll probably get a umadbro or if your not happy GTFO, but really should i have to GTFO for expressing an opinion on a matter thats actually incredibly annoying, i was here when the leechers crashed the site for the ps3 CFW and i accept that not everyone was a leecher but its just a shame to see what was such a great and helpful community turn into this fest of little kids trying to be the next mossy to their friends.
okay rant over just saying i miss NGU (also realised this thread may same pointless to some but i figured i might aswell post it here instead of talking to a brick wall although some of the users on this sit have the intellect of one :L)
thankyou very much please feel free to take the piss below
Honestly, the fundamental problem with the forum is that there's little quality control and not enough people prepared to post as part of a community but I think you're expecting too much if I'm honest.
Do I see flaws with NGU, hell yeah, more than you realise. As a gaming forum it fails on so many levels. It's console sections are too generic, it doesn't have a proper PC gaming section, games that would harbour a decent modding community are ignored, Nintendo is particularly ignored, and Call Of Duty is given too much space and center stage driving away non-CoD gamers who will be put off simply by it being so prevelant. The thing is, NGU has formed naturally, and the community has grown around certain things which generally don't last. "Gliches and Hacks" quite frankly are a niché appeal thing that most gamers couldn't give a shit about and many gamers are actually opposed to (myself included, there are many people who post things like Trophy hacks for PS3 and I honestly welcome their PSN bans, they're ruining the games for everyone else). The problem is, because it's what brought the majority of the audience to NGU, it's what the admin assume the members want.
Personally, I'd opt to expand and vary NGU in many ways. I feel the elusive NGU members who all share CoD glitches aren't here (seriously, are they really that interesting, so what you made your game glitch, well done). They where here but they've moved on to do other stuff, outside of NGU because NGU offers nothing else.
Really though. NGU is a community, not the site structure, and while I complain that the Nintendo section get's ignored and no other games are included I don't advertise them. I don't post in the Nintendo sub-forum anywhere near as much as the general chat, so if I don't why would others? We can't expect the change to just happen, we need to push for it with positive persuasion. We want a GTA forum, post loads of GTA threads in the General Chat and ask a mod to make a section. Eventually they will because there's a demand for it. If you want to post glitches, or videos of the glitches you've found great, do so...
One important thing to do is use the reward systems. Thank posts that you appreciate and nominate threads that are particularly good. You can influence people to make good threads with simple praise and positive reinforcement. As stupid as it sounds, when I was a new member, I posted long, effort filled threads because I got loads of +reps and 'thanks', not because I liked my rep going up, but because it showed that people wanted and appreciated my threads. It's nice to feel appreciated.
So. My advice is this.
1. Lead by example, make a decent thread at least once a day that you'd normally not make, and make sure to 'digg' the thread, 'like' it on Facebook, +1 it on Google, 'share' on Reddit and StumbleUpon. This will attract people to the forum that share your interests, and if your threads are good, make people post similar stuff.
2. 'Thank', 'Nominate' and 'Like' threads that you enjoy, especially the first two. While it's nice to receive a 'like' it's doesn't up your rep so it's not as noticable, however you're limited to, I think, 15 "Thanks" per day (to stop people spamming others with rep), where as you can 'like' as many times as you want. Specifically check out sub-forums you wouldn't normally as well, the main reason people don't post there, is others don't read there.
3. Make polite suggestions for format and layout changes no more than once per month in the site suggestions area of the forum. If you've got a good idea the admin team will listen.
These three steps will help NGU become what you want, but remember, it won't change overnight and it may never change. But the main thing is the community. Chat in the shoutbox, talk in the General Chat forums, and if you want a stimulating mature conversation come for a debate in the Debates section (but be warned we don't hold back). If the community is something you enjoy, that's what you should stay for in the long run.

:L
The bandwidth is a lot more when you get over 3/4 of a million members. It costs a lot to run a site with that many members... the members have quadrupled in the last 2 years. Did you not consider that?

Yeah... like me.
I started out with suggestions in the "site suggestions", I would make good threads and contributions, but my threads stopped happening, I started becoming more antagonistic and my suggestions quickly became demands and insults for not doing stuff to my liking fast enough... so yeah, don't do what I did. It didn't work. To be fair, as I started to become a grumpy bastard who did this I was also in excruciating regular physiotherapy for multiple dislocations and complex suplications and under extreme stress... but shit happens to everyone.
The moral of the story is don't be a dick, like me, it doesn't work... unless it does work and I just wasn't trying hard enough, hmmm, I must try harder...
Ownage you're a cock, and you smell like wet fart :3
