(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});While the second-hand gaming market is great for the consumer, it is of no benefit to the game developers, who receive nothing from the second-hand industry. This is leading to loss of revenue.
There are two alternatives for game developers, they either prohibit the practice of consumers selling their unwanted games, or they can take their new approach which is to charge second-hand users for online play. This would be done by having a single-use online access code to be included in game boxes. The original buyer would use the code, and subsequent owners would have to purchase a new code if they would like to make use of the game's online play.
EA have been the first game developers to use the idea, but it would appear that this will soon be used across the board. Companies such as Sony are considering using it for their first-party titles.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President Andrew House recently stated that they are exploring the option for their own content. He said that they may have to either implement this or a blanket charge for online play, but they would 'struggle with [that]' as they would prefer to keep PSN's free-to-use policy.

What do you make of the idea of charging subsequent game owners for online play?
To explain that Equation: Sony say their are 23million PlayStation 3's being used in the world today. Half of them the console are actively running PlayStation Network. But with the amount of people running 3 accounts (average) that brings the total accounts up to around 34.5million. Now some people only have one account (me) and others can have 6 accounts so my equation can be added up and down. But I'd say around 35million PSN accounts are around. But Sony have not released a figure of the amount of PlayStation Network player's because they know that the amount of PSN accounts exceed the amount of PlayStation 3's and they do not want everyone to know about this as it would ruin business and have them in a bad position with the other leading Console Makers who would laugh at them for being stupid enough to let this go on.... and also from the Game Makers demanding that they sort of the multi-account player's. But as this thread suggest's that Sony are indeed trying to cut down on multi-account players by bringing in an Online ID Code. But yes now we are screwed with Second Hand Games (I never buy second hand anyways). But it may only cost you €5 | £5 | $5 to buy the code and we still have free-to-play online. So it's still cheaper the xBox Live in all. But one thing Sony could do is make these code's free to PlayStation Plus member's. So I see where Sony are coming from with this....
But one thing Sony will have to do, and I mean have to, is give their players the ability to change their PlayStation Network user name because we wont be able to make new account's for Clans anymore because it would cost. They could have this feature free to only PlayStation Plus members. But everyone else it may cost say 25c per character.
But yeah were screwed for changing games around with friends and such, and Second Hand game industry is really ****** because if Sony and EA are doing this, Microsoft will sure do it aswell.
