Here I hav3 proof that the FW is NOT stored to the NAND.
It is stored to the hard disk. You must login or register to view this content.
In the img says "copying to hard disk" not NAND.
Well I'm just a noob ... lol, but trying to put together some of the info from the discussion thus far ... If you replaced the "Blue Ray Drive Board" (including the NAND, if indeed the firmware version key is there), then reformatted the HDD would the system accept a software backup from another machine that has not been updated beyond 3.41 ?
Luckily its not a problem for me, I'm just trying to answer a question for someone on another forum.

You're wrong on this. the nand is a memory unit on the motherboard. which stores the two main operating files "firmware and server.gdv" when you update its removes the check on the original "Firmware in the nand" and then replaces it with the new "firmware" leaving the operating files within the "nand" and the neutral files within the HDD.

why the fu*k do you think theirs an installing screen!!!
I think it is in the nand. I ordered a new hdd and didnt not backup anything, just wanted to use hdd as just backups only. When i installed the hdd it ask me for a firmware that was 3.41 or higher,my firmware was 3.41 when i replaced the harddrive. So there must be some copy of one specific file for the ps3 to know what firmware you are on.
This is absolutely not true... You had teh firmware on a USB stick! before it can install it it copies it to the hdd. from there it can start the update procedure
