Apparently, examination of the OFW has found a new feature that will allow Sony to download and run code when you login to PSN.

The code they can run is obviously to check for CFW or whatever, but the code could change to check for anything really.

And with the current state of PS3 security there is the possibility that others might be able to run their code on your PS3 without your knowledge.

I don't run CFW and I'm pretty pissed about this. What they are doing might be illegal in the EU.

Mathieulh just posted about it on IRC.

Essentially Sony can now remotely execute code on the PS3 as soon as you connect.

This can do whatever Sony wants it to do such as verifying system files or searching for homebrew. Sony can change the code and add new detection methods without any firmware updates and as the code executes remotely there is no reliable way to forge the replies.

Whilst it is possible to patch or remove this code from the firmware this will likely mean the end of playing CFW online (as PSN can just check before login that this is active) or at the very least mean it will be even easier for Sony to detect and ban users.

Judging from the fact that people can still connect using the proxy method it seems Sony hasn't activated any of this yet but the functions are there in the new firmware.

Jan 27 14:44:43 <Mathieulh> like remote code execution upon login

Jan 27 14:44:45 <Sorrowuk> They will just release patches so people who have hacked cant go online

Jan 27 14:44:46 <Mathieulh> yummy :P

Jan 27 14:44:50 <noone> WAT

Jan 27 14:45:00 <noone> RFE built-in the fw!?

Jan 27 14:45:25 <Mathieulh> 3.56 pretty much has a built in psn rootkit

Jan 27 14:45:30 <noone> dude, that's the only stuff i'd be afraid of

Jan 27 14:45:31 <Mathieulh> don't tell me I haven't warned you

Jan 27 14:45:43 <Sorrowuk> psn rootkit ?

Jan 27 14:46:05 <noone> but if we could rip-off the fw that shit would be erased

Jan 27 14:46:20 <noone> that was the only thing stopped sony to _auto_ update your fw

Jan 27 14:46:22 <Mathieulh> noone it's not that simple

Jan 27 14:46:29 <Mathieulh> the server awaits a proper reply

Jan 27 14:46:34 <Mathieulh> and that reply isn't in the firmware

Sony's not even trying to hide it either...

First of all lets get one thing straight, the HARDWARE is yours not the software, that belongs to sony and always will therefore if the decide you broke their terms of service they can disable said software. How useful will your ps3 be with no software, such as firmware, none at all. Now on topic, if we did not update to 3.56, the root kit does not exist, right? I did not accept the newest ToS so this means part of this does not apply to me (as far as the root kit) right?

i have no clue about the root kit but the software is not mine its only sonys but there is no ifs ands or buts they can not remotely or how ever disable my ps3
as in brick they are not allowed they can just bann you from psn
if it was allowed dont you think people on 360 and psp and blah blah blah would have had this done to them i do because just banning you from psn dont stop you from getting free games they can only stop that by security
im willing to bet that sony nor microsoft or who ever makes game systems can not fully brick you console as in no turning on or anything i may be wroung but
why hasnt it happend yet microsoft is a freaking computer buider you think if it was allowed they wouldnt know how
apple doesnt do this eaither
lmao and they get pissed about jailbreak im kicked out of bestbuy for jailbreaking ipads lol

Think what you will, but as much as you may want it to not be possible it is, if it comes down to it and they get to where they've had enough, such as constant use of CFW's and such, if they see disabling their software from your system as the only option they can and will, and good luck finding a lawyer you can afford to beat sony.

If Sony is going to f*ck with us then lets f*ck with Sony. Lets grab them motherheffers by the balls and twist a little. We have to bring it to them down hard. We cant let them win this shyt. Its our responsibility to ensure we get the power back to the gamer. Once we get this system hacked again, lets go to town on it. Cause Sony to lose as much money as we posssibly can. We pay $300 on our systems and we cant even use them how we want. Well lets get our money's worth guys.

Sony cannot ever damage your console. They have the right to deny service to the consumer but not damage the CONSUMER'S property.

Everytime Sony pulls **** like this, I pirate another game. Currently totaled is 13.

And Sony can go f*ck themselves over PSN, so glad I switched to XBL in the summer Cool Man (aka Tustin)

(Nothing against you guys who prefer PSN, although you can't deny this **** is completely out of order by Sony.)

Theres a simple way around this if you want to change and MW2 patch. Just put the patch on while your offline. Use wipe history and then put original Firmware back on.

Yeah true but backup manager wouldnt really be possible for playing online if it sends would it?

Maybe use a VPN to encrypt the PS3 code thats sent of to sony so they cannot read there own messages?

They really don't have the right to look through everything without your consent, and they REALLY don't have the right to brick your PS3 (All we did by hacking was break the warranty, it's not like what we did is killing their company (it's killing Ps3's Gamesales though because of pirated games).

That's why they've put it in the User Agreement, by accepting that agreement you're giving them consent to look through everything on your PS3.
