A user on GAF posted the following images showing he received the firmware update notification whilst the PSN is down today (click on image to enlarge): The PS3 owner, DailyVacation, was asked to verify his current PlayStation 3 firmware version and he replied:
Still at 3.60. If you select yes, you get the message stating you already have the latest firmware. So it seems they’re activating it for certain locations? I’m gonna put up screenshot in a bit.
Could Sony be starting to finally bring back the PlayStation Network?

Seems real, and his comments look real aswell.. Instead of saying yess i got online and yes i got cross-game chat and all that he just says no still 3.60 :p
But he says maby their activating in some locations, if they were doing that, why couldnt he download it.. and why should that message come up, that could maby a mistake from Sony:p..
But since its on their download server, or whatever you want to call it, it should be done soon.. Because if it wassnt done in anyway this would never happened.

i updated a ps3 to 3.60 while psn was down

update to latest firmware
update any game patches
there on seperate servers
same as the actual playstation network website is on a seperate server
