Climbing up the ladder
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Hey, my PS3 just recently broke and I took it apart and tried fixing it but got no luck. But before I threw it away (I took EVERYTHING apart) I took out the HDD (Disk Drive). Its the 120 GB slim from 2009, and its a Toshiba. Can I use it as a external hard drive? I think I can but do I need a enclosure for it? If I do, what kind do I need, and can you please post the link to buy it (I only use Amazon and eBay) thanks!!

I believe the problem you have it that the laptop/PC doesn't see the drive because of it's current format(Pc's can't read ps3's format). you need to format the Hd so it can be used on a PC. Most windows systems will see the enclosure as a plug & play usb device, not usually the problem. What's your Pc running windows 95,98,Me,2000,Xp, Vista, win7 ??? you just need to get into disk management and format the old ps3 hd and it should work fine.

What you currently have is your laptop, the enclosure and your Hard Drive Disc (HDD) from the PS3, now the problem is that your PC may not recognize your HDD or USB Port. A driver is kind of like a software to make something readable or usable, kind of like iTunes, If you download a movie from Apple, you need the iTunes Media Player to watch it, essentially this is the same thing, YOU NEED THE CORRECT DRIVER FOR IT TO BE RECOGNIZABLE. To find the driver, go on the website of the USB SATA enclosure's company/maker. Ex: iPod, iPhone = Apple.com. Search for the correct driver and download it. Now before doing all of this, unplug everything in the enclosure, cords etc.. And plug it back together and try again. If it does work, make sure to format the HDD via your laptop using My Computer- Right click on HDD- Format. If all of this fails, which it might, don't panic, I am sure that the problem is with the power source of the HDD enclosure, so just buy a new one. You must login or register to view this content. I am sure this one will work just fine. Contact me if you need any further help, Don't forget to +Rep/Thank me if I helped. Happy Holidays. Ohh and make sure that you put the Hard Drive correctly into the Enclosure.

Ahh alright man, thanks for all your help, I might actually buy that StarTech enclosure. But for my enclosure, theres no drivers available to download for it :( Heres the link to the website, I checked Google and the website and couldn't find anything. there are no drivers because it's considered a plug & play device. what operating system are you running on your pc/laptop? let me know and I will help you. All you should need to do is format the drive and your pc/laptop should read it.

Download Linux Backtrack and format the Hdd through that, The HDD is encrypted but you can format it. Windows wont read it because that's not what the console is familiar with.
1.Google Linux Backtrack
2.Get UnetBootin and download backtrack files and install ready for Boot from the USB.
3.Go into Bios Boot from USB. You probably no this stuff. They're will be tuts around the web.
4.Plug in the HDD via your sata 2.5 connecter USB connection one.
5.look for the HDD it should come up but you wont be able to access it but you should be able to format it.

this is all i can tell you that should work theyre are other ways but more complicated..

plug the usb enclosure with the drive in it into your usb port. if your enclosure uses 2 usb cables, have them both plugged in. then right click on my computer- left click manage. find disk management in the left column of the window that opened up. left click on it and it will show you all the hard drives that are connected. look for the drive that that is around 120gb( might be a little lower than 120gb) if you don't have any other drive that is around 120gb in your pc, then this is the ps3 drive. right click on it, in the list click format and format the drive. you may also get a message when you go into disk management about windows not being able to read a drive, if you do then have it fix it.

Alright, I'm downloading Linux Backtrack for my 64bit PC. And while it's downloading, what do I download UNetbootin for? Windows or Linux?
