Post: Lowering the Legal Drinking Age

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); I was just wondering what all of your thoughts on lowering the Legal drinking are. I personally think the drinking age in the U.S. should be lowered from 21 to 18. If a man can get married, vote for the president of his country, and join the military at 18, why can't he choose to have a drink or not? I would like to hear all of your thoughts on this

It's 18 over here in the UK, but most of us start drinking at 14-15 anyway Smile

Alcohol is almost only negative, and it harms those around you through your actions. Stop giving in to peer pressure; drinking alcohol is not cool and it does not make you seem more grown-up!

18 sounds more reasonable if all your other rights become available so should alcohol

Ok that was just ignorant. It's been proven over and over again that drinking alcohol moderately prevents heart disease. And who the hell do you think you're talking to? Peer pressure? Trying to seem more grown up? Please. I'm not pressured to do anything. I drink only in moderation and always responsibly.

In that case, fair enough. But don't call me ignorant; the cons of alcohol seriously outweigh the pros and kids tend to give in to peer pressure, which I'd rather prevent. I hope you see where I'm coming from.

The only reason I called you ignorant was because for those of us who actually do drink in moderation, it IS healthy. And you assumed that I was young and giving in to peer pressure to drink just to be cool. And now I see where you're coming from though, and I apologize for calling you ignorant. But in reality, the drinking age being 21 isn't stopped anyone under 21 from drinking, it's just forcing them to drink behind closed doors and in the dark. If the drinking age was 18, I think a lot of people would go out and drink at bars where it is much more regulated and supervised.

I think if anything it should be 16. But there should be a limit on the amount you can buy if your 16-18..
Or tax it for 16-18 year olds..

And by tax I mean HIGHER tax.

I think 16 is a bit too young. I'm all for revising the drinking age, but your livers aren't fully developed until about 14 years old. And obviously if it was lowered to 18, all the 18 year olds would jump right on that and go out and buy a ton of booze. But if they put a limit on how much an 18 year old could buy at once, or tax it a lot like you said, then it might lower the chance of a spike in drunk driving and other alcohol related deaths. Then, after all the excitement dies down from the change, they will see a big change in how many 18 year olds don't die at college parties or at their own homes in their basements from alcohol poisoning. Instead, they will all be at the bars, and under supervision.

And at these bars, they could limit 18 year olds to a certain amount of beers to prevent drunk driving. Which will solve most of the drunk driving problem for this change. The only possibility would be for 18 year olds to buy a ton of alcohol and drink at their friends' houses and drive home. But 18 year olds already do that even though it's illegal.
