The Xbox brand, originally becoming popular during the time of the Playstation 2 and Nintendo Gamecube, has become the icon for Microsoft's gaming sector.

Apparently, Microsoft was completely serious when they said they were planning on launching NATAL like an entirely new console. According to various bits of evidence and other sources, Microsoft indeed plans to finish off the Xbox brand after the Xbox 360. The thing is, as rumored in the past, they don't plan on ending their gaming sector altogether.

The information is coming from a FOX Interactive Media employee, who says the well known IGN is in the process of "phasing out the Xbox name". Some of you may remember when TeamXbox, a popular gaming site and forum, lost its co-founder and editor-in-chief. The two individuals were fired by IGN. From that time to present day, there has been a significant decrease in the amount of information provided by Team Xbox.

Around the same time the co-founder and editor-in-chief were fired, FOX Interactive Media rebranded the Team Xbox website with the "Powered by IGN" slogan. This is a sign that the Xbox name is losing value, and is in the process of being replaced. Or so is rumored.

The most substantial evidence, however, is the beginning of Microsoft's strive to replace the Xbox logo and name with other things. While information concerning those things has not been released, it is said that some products are now missing the Xbox logo and name. It is also said that Microsoft has been sending out new box art and logos, clearly not referring to Xbox or the name in any way.

It is without a doubt that more information will come concerning this in the future, and I'll make sure to keep an eye on things when that time comes.

Schaffin's Bit

This sort of news, despite my love for the Xbox console, always excites me. The rumor that the Xbox name could be going away altogether is big news indeed. Why would Microsoft be willing to drop a name and logo known so well worldwide, if they weren't planning on making something big to replace it?

Microsoft, whether you like them or not, is a great corporation, which has always taken into account what the best business moves would be. I can't see them dropping something of such value without having a solid plan to replace it with.

What are your thoughts on this? I know that there have rumors like this in the past, but this news stands out to me because of the number of things that seem to go along with this information.

I myself Prefer the Playstation 3 over the Xbox 360, but its easy to see that this is a huge mistake for Microsoft, the xbox is a well known across the major markets and by dropping there logo its going to be hard for them to introduce a new gaming console whether motion controlled or not.

Remind me, how much earlier was the 360 released?

The Gamecube, PS2 & Xbox were all released 3+ years after the Dreamcast, and it slaughtered it in terms of sales. Release date is irrelevant. Smile

And to everyone here starting the whole PS3 v. 360 arguments, just shut the hell up. Nobody cares, no matter what you say, I'll continue playing my 360 and you'll continue playing your PS3s. I for one enjoy both to some extent, and I'd be more than willing to ditch Microsoft and go back to Sony if they ever released a completely motion-based console. No point in continuing to spam.

What is being released as 'NATAL' right now is only an addition to the 360 console. NATAL will not be your average gaming, so for Microsoft they have to keep that slot open to people who love their normal games.

NATAL is an add-on that is only capable of working with a 360, not vice-versa. So if we see a NATAL instead of 360, ti would be in several years. And I don't see Microsoft completely getting a rid of the most successful console in the market right now.

Well I know that, I'm just saying, they might use the NATAL name for the new console that's replacing the 360 in a few years and focus the new console around motion control where right now it's the opposite. Maybe they're going to use the sale numbers from the NATAL add-on to determine if they should pursue the motion-based console later on? Idunno. Seems plausible to me.

Quite frankly, I don't care what Microsoft does. If they make a new console for NATAL (which they won't, since it's basically a damn camera), then good for them, they wasted money.

And nobody cares who makes more sales. You can love whatever console and whatever company you want.
