(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Here I hav3 proof that the FW is NOT stored to the NAND.
It is stored to the hard disk.

In the img says "copying to hard disk" not NAND.

i think it was stored in the NAND originally, but now i believe it is mainly stored on the HDD but the most important bit is on the NAND, This is because they decreased the size of the NAND to save money on newer models.

That Doesn't Prove Nothing It Is On the Nand Trust Me You Can take the hardrive out in it will still be there.

if I were to download a 400 meg file, where would I decompress it to before writing it to the onboard memory?

Thats right. Full download, decompress to HDD, run the checks over it to make sure its complete/legit BEFORE flashing. Then flash.

I don't think sony would be clumsy enough to store it on the HDD.

He is just saying that the actual firmware is downloaded to the HDD, the HDD doesn't store the firmware forever. The firmware is then checked over to see if it is legit sony firmware. Then the NAND is flashed with the firmware that you just downloaded! Because of this the HDD doesn't come into the equation with what firmware you have. Hope you understand this now

If there was no firmware stored in flash, downgrading would be as simple as wiping the hard drive.

The first ps3's had the entire fw stored in flash, then as firmwares got bigger while sony wanted to use smaller chips, they changed it so the flash only handles critical boot up so the bulk of the firmware can use the hard drive.

so when you start updating the ps3 it first copies all the files over to the ps3's hdd? well can't you get those decompressed files with ftp if you shut off the ps3 right after the copying is done?
