First of all, What IS Underground PSN.

It's a concept that someone could completely remove all connection to Sony's servers and redirect that to a remote server. So we could pretty much host our own Private Servers for PSN.

So what we're looking for is someone to edit the Firmware and re-route the connection from the official PSN to an underground remote server.

It could work in theory, but it'd take a lot of effort.

There'd be a few major issues.

First issue, the server. I don't think anyone would have the money and motivation to pay for a server large enough.

A solution for this would be to code the Firmware to allow remote private servers, and then give people tools to host their own Private PSN servers, so instead of one huge underground server, we'd have a lot of little servers with as many people as the server host would allow. Typically Private Servers would have anywhere from only 10-20 people to several thousand.

Another problem being there wouldn't be any Cross-Site Sharing, so you would have to have different profiles for different Private servers. We could give tools to allow Cross-Site Sharing but it could be difficult

That would fix that problem, then comes the next one:

We'd need a few expert coders to actually CREATE the firmware. I imagine removing the connection to Sony's servers and replacing it with some sort of GUI where you input an IP address and port for the server you want to connect to, and then you register your username and password for that server.

The final problem, creating the Private servers. As you could imagine, you'd not only need a lot of space for all the users etc., but you'd also need a universal method of sorting and storing the files, the reason for this is that I'd imagine the directories for where to send certain information are coded into the Firmware, not the server.

So, if we can get past all these issues, I could definitely see this being a possibility, maybe not in the NEAR future, but some time in the future.

If anything I've said here doesn't make sense or is incorrect, feel free to correct me. I don't know if you could do it by editing the firmware but I'm sure it'd be possible somehow.

Just to clarify, here's what I mean: You turn on your PS3, and the PSN icon is replaced by the logo for whoever created the firmware, or whatever he/she/they want(s) it to be, maybe a bunny? Anyway, it'd be renamed to whatever the creator(s) wanted it to be, I'd imagine something like [Name of Person/Group]-Net so something like GeoHot-Net, but that's really not important, I just put that in there as a suggestion. The bunny thing was a joke.

Anyway, after opening that, it'd provide you with a list of Private Servers you have already registered on, maybe even a browser-type thing where the server hosts pay the creators to have their server listed there to get more traffic. Anyway, there'd be an option to connect to a new server, which you'd have to do initially. You enter the IP and Port, then register a Username and Password on that server. After that, it connects you to that server and PRESTO! PSN Private Servers. To disconnect from the private server you would do it the same as disconnecting from PSN (Highlight the PSN icon, press Triangle, press Sign Out).

I would imagine that eventually we'd be able to get an Auto Sign-In feature whereby you select one server and it automatically signs you into that server when you start up the PS3, possibly even allowing for different servers for each user on the PS3.

Thank you for reading, this took a while to write, +Rep appreciated but I'm not gonna beg for it.

Hey there.

It actually is a kind of a good idea. But there´s 2 main issues:

1.) Private Servers? So i basically would have to give my PSN ID and my Password to some random guy? NO WAY.

2.) Games: I really dont know much about t, but what about playing online? I mean if there are only like 10 - 20 people on one server, there are 2-3 people playing black ops. You get what i mean? There´s probably got to be something like a main access point where everything get splitted or something like that..

Pls reply to this, im kina interested in this idea.

You would not need to use your PSN account details what so ever. You would have to join the new server's with new login detail's. It would be completely separate of that from the PSN.

This might actually happen, but how u worded is that every PSN user will jailbreak their PS3's. Thats not the way, as things have been going, only say what, 3000-4000 users have jailbroken PS3's?, if thats the case, you wouldnt need a huge server, a small one would suffice becuase those users are only storing info about their, say, avatars, user ID, passwords, and info...

Definitely possible, people on a ps2 game I used to play, made their own servers when the real servers got shut down. I don't doubt this is possible for ps3.

Exactly what we were getting at over at the actual thread for this. We do not need massive server's and all of the such he is saying. I totally take his idea's in account. He made some good point's. But it's not as complicated as everyone would make it out to be. Smile

Greatness
We all know the NGU donation ammount is WAY over what we need each month, if the site did choose to make such a big project it could potentially bring new members (more donations) and more members with the knowledge to do it.

I think it could become a site project (only members who are smart enough to do it) and we would need a project leader, someone who chooses who sees what (eg who is allowed to view our work so no leakers)

Thats the kind of thinking that makes things happen. Smile So would NGU be interested in such a thing? I couldn't see why not. But yes I totally agree with every word you said. Hopefully something like that can arise from this. The more people we can get into the project to help us the faster we can achieve this.
