Where is your router? In the same room as your PS3 and easily accessible? Cause with a switch it would still have to be wired unless its wireless.

router is downstairs, and i would connect the switch wired in between my router and modem

If you are going to do that, why not just put the lag switch in between the router and modem? You are still running the cords. There is no reason to use a Ethernet switch if you are going to connect it like that anyway and still run the wires upstairs to your PS3.

you see with network switches, arnt they the same as having 4 ports at the back of your modem like mine has?

my modem and router both have 4 ports at the back of them

There is nothing wrong with differing opinions. Because the more people he has to help him, the better his options will be. Why is that a bad thing?

So what is the reasoning for you using a Ethernet switch to accomplish your goal? Cause I am thinking this is getting more complicated then it needs to be.

well ive heard that they incease lag time, so im thinking of buying one

so then my setup would be this

modem ----5m cable-----switch---1m cable---router>>>>> wireless>>>> laptop (uses cain and abel to posion the connection on the modem)

playing on ps3 at same time.
