In recent weeks LG have claimed the PlayStation 3 infringes on a number of its patents relating to Blu-ray technology, and they have managed to secure a preliminary injunction against Sony for customs to seize and confiscate all PS3s coming into Europe for up to ten days, granted by the civil court of justice in the Hague. The consoles are reportedly being temporarily held in Dutch warehouses until the case moves forward.

The Guardian believes retailers will have enough PS3s to last two to three weeks. Sony have the right to file an appeal to the patents office - but if the court eventually rule in favour of LG, Sony will be forced to compensate the company for every PlayStation 3 which has been sold around the world to this day.

They can't just pay off $16 billion and carry on with their business, something like this could definitely leave the company in ruins, as I'm sure they're already in millions of debt and have other contracts set up which required money.

Have a look at the previos page numbers in this thread, it will be around $16 billion owed to LG, not a hundred million.

16 Billion dollars would make a huge difference, it would definitely damage them financially. To be honest I don't see how you get that number, sony is only worth a little over 45billion dollars with all there assets combined. That's over 25% of there net worth. Your basically saying sony will owe LG over 250$ on ever system sold?

If sony was force to pay 50$ to LG on every console sold it would come up to around 2.5billion dollars. I image them being less then 20$ on every system cause that is reasonable, but without a doubt nothing close to 16billion dollars. Sorry.

You're probably closer to it, but I was trying to emphasize a point with the $16 billion.. which is that we're talking several billion. I reckon it'll be anything from $5-15 billion.

i dont know where the 16 billion number came from, since no one on this thread knows how much will be owed per system, and since sony makes a shit ton of money, theyll be ok, and they arent in debt. the biggest electronics manufacturer doesnt go in debt easily.
but...no matter how much they shell out...it wont feel good for sony. funny how it took 5 years for LG to decide to sue sony over patents on blu ray...somethings fisht about that.
