I thought the law on this matter was that you owned the hardware, but were licensing the software (firmware) and so they can't damage your hardware as that'd fall under the Vandalism you mentioned, but they can stop licensing your software.
Whether this results in no more updates to your console or removal/crippling of the software I don't know as I have no idea what Sony can/can't do to the console remotely (although all their actions to date would suggest that they are anal enough to do the latter if they can)
