(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.

An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.
Should the planned attack succeed, it would be the latest blow in a series of devastating security breaches of Sony's servers over the past month. The failure of Sony's server security has ignited investigations by the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General, a well as data security and privacy authorities in the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan.

Several weeks ago the hacker group known as Anonymous targeted several Sony Web sites, including Sony.com and SonyStyle.com, with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in retaliation for what its members saw as Sony's unfair legal action against hacker George Hotz. Two weeks ago Sony's PlayStation Network, along with its Qriocity service and Sony Online, were the target of an attack that exposed the personal information of more than 100 million Sony customers. Sony was forced to shut down PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online, and is currently working to bring them back online after rebuilding the security of its servers.

Sony says it doesn't know who orchestrated what it's calling a "highly sophisticated, planned" attack, but it has dropped hints that the group Anonymous is involved. Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, told a Congressional subcommittee in a letter yesterday that the intruders on its servers planted a file named "Anonymous" containing the statement "We are Legion," part of the group's tagline.

Anonymous issued a statement yesterday denying it was involved in the PSN breach. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft," the statement said.
Now it seems the same group of hackers that was able to infiltrate the PSN servers is planning to hit back against Sony.
Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Instead of seeking legal action against bootleggers it was easier to try and stop CFW as a whole. You can't trust people. Because of Youtube and forums like these any Noob can leech and run CFW and they make innocent hackers look bad.

You can't risk money and customers accounts just to appease the SMALL percentage of innocent hackers. It doesn't matter if Geohot's original intent for releasing code was to make the PS3 an 8 track, the end result was people having ability to pirate.

A similar issue could be said about the right to free speech though; people abuse that right all the time yet we keep it because it's incremental and vital to the way we live. The same goes for consumer's rights, all sorts of BS would occur if we didn't have that in our favor.

Actually if Sony took out the Blu Ray that would be like Samsung removing HD. OS is at best the fifth best feature PS3 has.

Incorrect. Without Sony's OS on the PS3 our system would become inoperable as there's nothing along the lines of a boot menu you could use to load your own OS(similar to a PC), this is Sony's fault. If Samsung removed HD the system remains operable on SD and with modifications HD can probably be recovered.

CFW, Other OS, etc.. All this leads to piracy. PIRACY is illegal! Dont you people understand? Sony are offering people such a fantastic home entertainment system. Why are people and hackers becoming so selfish, and anti SONY. Without sony, there would be no Playstation in the first place. So stfu and appreciate what Sony are doing.

Hacking is becoming into some sort of cyber terrorism. Leave playstation and there servers the f*ck alone. I hate hackers who do this! Aghhh ffs!!

Don't mix up homebrew hackers with malicious hackers.

Example, I use homebrew. But I would never hack into PSN for credit card details. Get it? Good.

If they fuk'd up anything, it has to be the site or SOE. They must not play with the PSN shit again because they are playing with serious information about people.

Sony gives you other option to update but you have to update to play online. There is fine print everywhere. We keep free speech yet there are consequences for said speech.

As far as TV example, I was speaking on relevance. The key selling point and most relevant reason to buy an HDTV is the high def. The key selling point and most relevant feature on a PS3 is not Other OS. A company can't risk losing money just to to appease a mihority of people who with Other OS or CFW usually for piracy. Most agreements mention that they are subject to change when you agree to them.

I just think consumer rights became gray area when you break agreements.

Ok, I'm don't understand why sony is getting hacked by these hackers <-- lol no shit but anyways GeoHot settled with Sony to where he got off easy by not being able to post his Ps3 related hacking shtuff on the internet. That's no reason to retaliate because it's not that big of a punishment

see here is the main problem. If you start counting the number of people who have CFW who have pirated games, it will be around 90% or more. If these hypocritical dickwads didn't start pirating then both Sony and the OtherOs users would be happy and this would not have occurred. Start blaming them, not the hackers nor Sony.

That's fine, however what's not fine is suing users who stay offline and use CFW. That's completely out of order.
