Post: God vs Science
02-05-2013, 10:02 PM #1
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The thread that was the shining light of the last two debating sections(ugh, really?) that was God vs Fact has been trashed or something(ugh, again) so this thread is here to take the place of that one.

Some extremely basic terminology...

Theist: believes in a god(s).
Deist: believes in a god(s) that created the universe but subsequently abandoned it and/or believes that reason and observation of the natural world are sufficient to determine the existence of god(s).
Atheist: does not believe in a god(s).
Agnostic: does not claim to know if a god exists or believes that such knowledge cannot be known, depending on the definition. Typically when I personally use this label I'm referring to the former.
Gnostic: claims to know one way or the other if a god exists.

There are some more but that's the basics down. I'm an agnostic atheist. What are you and why?

Edit: Thanks to whichever mod/admin butchered the thread's title and poll. The poll now makes no sense whatsoever.

I even talked to a few doctors who give vaccine shots to ppl, but said they wouldn't dare inject them into their children or themselves. Even put in my own due diligence and looked into what they put in the vaccines and it is not anything good for the body. But don't take my word for it, just wait for the authorities to tell you it's safe and go inject yourself with it.

You got me all wrong, I look at all sides before I make my conclusion as opposed to waiting for the "official" explanation. I question everything. That was my point from the get-go, is not to just accept things as true just because it is "official".

I don't say this often, but you are wrong. Vaccines have saved countless lives and conspiracies against them are foolish. I would be shocked if there was even one peer review paper making such an argument.

Saw this and had to say that I was the only one in my family that didn't get a stomach flu vaccine this year and I never got sick.. While my mom, brother and aunt got sick. Maybe just a coincidence but still :p

A couple of things.

The flu vaccine that is commonly given out is for a specific type of flu, keep in mind there are different flus. In addition to this, one of the possible side effect of getting a flu shot are some flu-like symptoms for a couple days.

I was more of referring to the many many other vaccines that have come out :P

Personally I believe in science but I can see why people put their faiths elsewhere. Death for people whom aren't religious is kind of dark inless you believe in coming back as something else after you pass on. But religion on the other hand gives you hope and gives you this sense of calm because you will be in a much better place with your loved ones. Atleast i think lol i don't know much about it, i wasn't brought up with any kind of religion.

I can understand people turning to religion because of their fear of death. If you offered the average person the choice between unending darkness, deafness and numbness and an eternal paradise, you'd get a tiny minority choosing the former.

This is a false representation of the choice though. Ignoring the fallacy of choosing a belief because it's just nicer, a naturalistic death isn't darkness, deafness or numbness, it's just nonexistence.

Religion is a good physiological crutch for those that fear death, however the irony being that religious people have a shorter life. Fear of death is a motive but I don't think it's a reason as to why one would adopt a religion. Just because something is ideal doesn't mean it's convincing.

It isn't a choice between nonexistence and an eternal paradise either, it's a choice between accepting nonexistence or not.

Well, the "darkness/deafness/numbness" view of death was what I was scared of a few years ago. Looking back on it now, I think that fear was kind of like being scared of the dark as a little kid.

Science does fail you take away the computer and then do research for yourself how quickly do you think you can do that? For instance instead of googling verses that you cant understand open your Bible and read them Smile

Its not lack of proof, Its people want to do whatever they want and not be accountable for the way they live. There is more proof for the Bible than anything in the world but people want to refute it because they say "oh if I believe in the Bible im gonna have to stop sinning and thats what I like to do" Not an evidence problem its a heart problem. Nuff said Smile
