Post: Faking 3.41 as 3.51+

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); So anyways... I was messing around with the 3.41 firmware file and finally got the PS3 to detect my 3.41 firmware file as a 3.51

I tried it and got this

So what I'm guessing is that you can't just fake the firmware version to update your PS3, something else has to be involved in the PS3's update. If anyone knows how to get past that error maybe we would be able to get 3.41 as a firmware above 3.50

Consider it is not just headers, it is signed (That is not the header) it has version control as well as things we are NOT aware of. It has not been made possible as of right now.

You are better off putting time in getting online with 3.41 then trying to crack updates at the moment.

Could you upload the file to mediafire?

Compare the 3.50 and 3.41 firmware. See what's the same, and what's the difference. This might be possible if you find the signature. If you do, you could possibly take the signature from 3.50 and add it to the 3.41. OR i'm just talking out my ass.

Maybe if we had more time before new firmwares come out we may accomplish something. XD

Seems worthy

Well anyways, to those still trying to fake the firmware, I'll just give you some advice based on what I believe (so i'm not too sure about this though), since it seems like I'm not getting anywhere anymore (lol)

This is for HxD Hex Editor: (dunno about other hex editing programs)

1. On the 3.41 firmware file, click anywhere at the top of the file and press Ctrl + F

2. Where it says Datatype, switch it to Hex-values and put
03 00 41 in the search bar and search it.

It should look a little something like this:

You must login or register to view this content.

Edit it to whatever you want your version to be
Search forward for another 2 times I believe

Do NOT edit anything that looks like this:

I am not 100% on this, but based on my understanding, those are also version files the ps3 reads (But I still got the error)

I just put this up incase someone is trying to do the same
I checked the same thing on the other 2 firmwares and got the same results (03 00 42 in a 3.42 file and 3.50 etc.)

Retired, done with gaming
Your seriously wasting your time with this.
If you change one single byte your breaking the md5 hash algorithm.
So, /PS3/UPDATE/MODDED.PUP = 8002F99D

Cmon this is Sony they have kept a damn well good job keeping the
system secure ( not including JB & geohot ) dont you think this would
be something they make sure to be secure? I mean geez its the firmware
for crying out loud!

Nice find... Doubt you'd be able to get any further with this.

Some things to check

The frimware has CRC value for each file in the update package.

i believe the updater.pup checks each file before updating, if the crc doesn't match it won't update.

So not only are you going have to change the version number.

You are going to have to make sure the updater/system verifies the firmware by seeing if the files are intact, (going to have to find what stores CRC info, and modify it accordingly)

if someone could debug the Updater.pup that would probably be the key to all your problems.

also, take note of the changes from 3.41 to 3.50 Happy
