This September, Sony will launch a new program called ‘PSN Pass’–available only, “in countries that have PlayStation Store”. Games that come with PSN Pass will include a registration code that is good for one-time use to enable online play. The first game to make use of PSN Pass program appears to be Resistance 3 (see image above, from Konsolentreff). Obviously, you will have to purchase a new PSN Pass registration code for used games that carries the PSN Pass emblem. Gaming site IGN contacted SCEA for clarification and this is the response:

We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities.
This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.

This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.

The problem is, PSN Plus is up to the buyer. With PSN Pass, we have absolutely no say and payment is mandatory.

If they bring it out. If they're going to charge that there is almost no point in not having XBL. XBL, you get what you paid for ultimately. Playstation is much more limited in comparison because it's free. But if they're going to start charging, they better start adding to PSN or I'll be one of the customers they lose.

It makes sense that this is happening, as game companies lose a LOT of money in the used games market. Suprised it didn't come sooner.
