This September, Sony will launch a new program called ‘PSN Pass’–available only, “in countries that have PlayStation Store”. Games that come with PSN Pass will include a registration code that is good for one-time use to enable online play. The first game to make use of PSN Pass program appears to be Resistance 3 (see image above, from Konsolentreff). Obviously, you will have to purchase a new PSN Pass registration code for used games that carries the PSN Pass emblem. Gaming site IGN contacted SCEA for clarification and this is the response:

We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities.
This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.

This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.

Do a barrel roll!
i just simply wont buy games with this. problem solved? if we boycott games like this it will make a difference. but it has to be the
majority of the population not just a few.

I don't like it, we already pay for the game. I understand developers need to get a profit but making the people that couldn't get a game new pay for it is not right.

Basically this is the same thing as the current online passes for games like Battlefield Bad Company 2, Homefront, Mortal Kombat, MoH, seems like psn pass may be for playstation exclusives possibly? So maybe only on resistance, killzone, uncharted, and other psn exclusive titles maybe? And the other companies may be keeping to there own systems like EA has been recently... im hoping thats all this is only time will tell if it works well or not.

Yeah and don't assume things, I usually buy used games anyway. $60 is to expensive to spend on a video game, I have more important things to spend money on. So I don't want to have to spend money to play online, that is ridiculous. Stop defending this stupid Idea. And how does this prevent game sharing? How the hell do you game share a disc? Think before you post. It really does help.

You do not spend extra money to play online dude, only if you buy an used game.
Ever heard of that you can buy games over the store?
I am not defending this idea, but you are taking it miserably wrong.

Calm down guys, every game will come with a code. Its like a PC verification code. It is to prevent piracy. You only have to purchase one if you buy used games :FU:
