Post: God vs Science
02-05-2013, 10:02 PM #1
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The thread that was the shining light of the last two debating sections(ugh, really?) that was God vs Fact has been trashed or something(ugh, again) so this thread is here to take the place of that one.

Some extremely basic terminology...

Theist: believes in a god(s).
Deist: believes in a god(s) that created the universe but subsequently abandoned it and/or believes that reason and observation of the natural world are sufficient to determine the existence of god(s).
Atheist: does not believe in a god(s).
Agnostic: does not claim to know if a god exists or believes that such knowledge cannot be known, depending on the definition. Typically when I personally use this label I'm referring to the former.
Gnostic: claims to know one way or the other if a god exists.

There are some more but that's the basics down. I'm an agnostic atheist. What are you and why?

Edit: Thanks to whichever mod/admin butchered the thread's title and poll. The poll now makes no sense whatsoever.

This. I remember that as a mod you get a lot of flak but really after for whatever stupid reason removing the last thread could you not see I already made a new one?

I do believe science put us here to begin with but if there is a God then he/she must have some very sick humor. Am a Buddhist so my answer about this falls in there with N/A because most religious figures think we nuts.

I'm an Atheist.

Yes, I was baptized and my whole family are Christians but I think it's a bit silly to believe. You have so many freaking religions to pick from, to follow, and yet, you really don't know which one it the right religion and which one is the wrong religion. It's like picking a side; I'm team Christian (not really) and your team Muslim (maybe). One will win because only one is right. Will it be a draw? Maybe. Why? Because maybe both are wrong.

I also want to say. . . it's not wrong to believe. My view on people who believe is that they seek 'god' when they need help, they seek god when a life crisis occurs like a death in the family. They seek god when. . . for whatever reason.

Last, I want to say fuck you to the church channel, on Time Warner Cable, my grandfather was watching awhile ago. It said something like this: "If you don't believe in god your destined to go to hell." Again, fuck you.

I'd be the one that did that. :p

On Topic: I never really thought about it that much. I think of it sort of like Santa, laugh if you want, but come on... We all believed in Santa until we found out the truth. I guess it's like that for me. I know there aren't any facts to prove he exists, but it's something to believe in.

Everything you just mentioned is subject to confirmation bias and an incredible lack of scientific investigation. If faith raised the dead or healed people we'd know and utilise that as a society by now. Casting out demons is honestly just funny. There are deconverts who can recall speaking in tongues and being possessed, and in retrospect they know they were putting it on even if they weren't really aware of it at the time. It's fascinating from a psychological perspective.

Also, if you can heal with faith, why do cancer sufferers with great faith still die? Were they just not believing strongly enough or was it just all part of "God's plan"?

So you are on the fence? I am in the same boat.

You're both agnostic, sure, but you're both also theists or atheists. If you're not sure that probably means you're the latter.

Being unable to answer questions about the universe's origin in no way validates the claim of a god. All it means is that we quite simply don't know, although I'm fairly sure we know a great deal more than I'm capable of comprehending and memorising.
